Ecovillage Networks

Definition of an Ecovillage

An ecovillage is an intentional or traditional community that locally integrates the four dimensions of sustainable development—social, ecological, cultural, and economic—in order to foster a lifestyle in harmony with the environment.

International Network: GEN

The international network of ecovillages is called GEN (Global Ecovillage Network). It brings together over 3,000 ecovillages worldwide and promotes this way of life to governments and educational institutions, helping communities become greener, more respectful, inclusive, and active in creating a lifestyle that is both rich and low in carbon emissions.

Youth Network: NextGEN

Young adults in ecovillages are closely connected to the international NextGEN network. Its mission is to make decades of ecovillage living experience accessible to the new generation. To learn more about what’s happening in North America, visit: www.nextgenna.org.

Educators Network: Gaia Education

For those who wish to develop ecovillages, conduct research on sustainable living, or simply better understand the 20 key elements of an ecovillage, there is a team of educators: Gaia Education. This group of professionals offers a variety of trainings related to ecovillages, including the EDE course offered here at Cité Écologique.
