Steve Grandmont, entrepreneur and member of the ecovillage, had long dreamed of this beautiful project, which now complements his other activities and brings new opportunities to the ecovillage site.
« In spring 2024, we tapped 1,400 maple trees, which allowed us to produce 12 barrels of syrup. With the size of our sugarbush, we plan to expand to 5,000 taps by spring 2025.
This year, we kept two barrels for transforming into a variety of maple treats—taffy, butter, cones, lollipops, and more. These delights are available at La Boutique de la Cité, the Petit Marché in Ham-Nord, and in select local grocery stores.”
— Steve Grandmont
While the sugar shack is run by several members of the ecovillage, it’s the strong family spirit that truly stands out. Three generations of the Grandmont family are involved—from Grandma Suzanne to Steve’s son, Élohim.
Élohim is proud to support his father and is preparing to take over the reins by pursuing a vocational diploma in maple production. His training covers everything from identifying trees to processing and marketing the many delicious maple products.
All maple treats are lovingly prepared by Suzie and sold at La Boutique de la Cité.
