A Sugarbush at the Heart of La Cité

Did you know that La Cité Écologique is home to nearly 30 hectares of sugar maple forest? A few years ago, Steve Grandmont—a passionate entrepreneur and longtime member of our ecovillage—decided to bring this resource to life by launching a project close to his heart: a sugar shack that’s both modern and respectful of tradition and the environment.

Last year, we tapped 1,400 maple trees, producing 12 barrels of syrup. Encouraged by this first season, we expanded our efforts this year with 4,000 taps—boosting production while honoring the natural rhythm of the forest.

But the sugar shack isn’t just about maple syrup! A portion of our harvest is transformed into delicious treats like maple butter, maple sugar, and other sweet delights, available:
✅ At La Cité’s Boutique
✅ At Le Petit Marché in Ham-Nord
✅ In several local grocery stores

A Family Affair

Beyond its entrepreneurial spirit, La Cabane à Grandmont is above all a family adventure. Three generations are involved—from Grandma Suzanne, who helps her daughter Suzie with product preparation, to Steve’s son Élohim, who is actively preparing to take over.

Passionate about maple farming, Élohim is currently completing a vocational diploma (DEP) in maple syrup production, learning everything from tree identification to syrup transformation.

We’re proud to see this beautiful project flourish and contribute to the vitality of our community!
